What Is Ethereum Classic (ETC)?
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain launched in July 2015 by the platform’s enigmatic lead founder, Vitalik Buterin, and seven other co-founders. Exactly a year later, in July 2016, the blockchain was forked into a new version, which became known as Ethereum (ETH), while the original network coined the name Ethereum Classic (ETC). The newer ETH chain, supported by Buterin, quickly established itself as the leader among smart contract platforms.
The Ethereum Classic chain retained the network’s original consensus mechanism, proof of work (PoW), and remained much less publicized than its offspring. Similar to the more well-known Ethereum, Ethereum Classic supports smart contracts and decentralized apps (DApps). Being much smaller and less congested than Ethereum, Ethereum Classic has vastly lower transaction fees, which typically amount to less than $0.01 per transfer.
The platform’s cryptocurrency, ETC, has a number of differences from the ETH coin. Most notably, ETC is a supply-capped coin, while ETH has no such capping. ETC’s mining rewards are also regularly reduced by 20% every 5 million blocks, further improving the coin’s deflationary properties.
